Chapter Five

When Maithe awoke, Astle was already up. The halfling drowsily tossed to and fro in bed. It became rather apparent to him that he wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep while in someone else’s bed. The more he thought about it, the more he realized this was his bed from here on out. Until he was released from Astle’s patronage, which didn’t seem to be any time soon, he would share the abode of his human. The thought wasn’t all that displeasing as it crossed his mind.

He growled slightly at the thought of anyone owning him. The hard metal ring wrapped about his shaft made him want to scream. Maithe wasn’t anyone’s slave, and he sure as hell would not have given himself to a human. He hated humans! The faux cherub sighed as he flopped onto his side. This wasn’t going to be easy. His heart screamed out for Astle, and his mind told him to run the other direction.

As he thought about the prince, he couldn’t help but wonder where the human had run off to. There was no telling where the prince had disappeared to, but Maithe was happy for the small reprieve. The prince’s presence was smothering and all-encompassing. Every time that he was near the human, he thought that the beast might swallow him whole.

Maithe’s hope for a bit of time to himself was abolished as soon as he heard Astle’s voice calling him. The halfling sat upright in bed with the covers still strewn across his lower half.

“Why are you waking me up at this godforsaken hour,” the hellion snapped.

“I thought that we could spend the day together,” the prince said. “I know that you haven’t had any chance to explore Solindira much. I was thinking that we might head south and down to the ocean line. It’s only a few hours ride from here. There’s a small town there known as Wylin. My brother, Abdiel, said that it was the most beautiful spot in this godforsaken country. He camped outside of there for a few weeks when his troops were taking siege of Kastulle.”

Maithe’s interest was roused when he mentioned getting out of Solindira and seeing the ocean side. He had always wanted to go to some of the coastal towns.

“That sounds like it wouldn’t be a bad idea. I have always wanted to try some of the famous Wylin shellfish. They say that it’s only off that coast that they can be found,” Maithe said.

Astle smiled toward Maithe. The expression melted his innards to that of warmed molasses. Maithe wondered how he would be able to resist this human. He knew that he needed to, but everything about Astle was almost too good to be true. Maithe decided he would have to find the man’s flaws, focus on them, and make Astle otherwise completely unattractive to him. The desperate plan was the only one he could conceive of that might give him some hope of getting out of this with his freedom intact.
